Songs For Mom, Dad Or Both.
Posted on: 03/09/2010 06:04 AM

I just sent a get well greeting for Steven's mother plus my favourite song when reminiscing about my dearly departed mum - B J Thomas' "Mama". It brings tears and even regrets, memories so vast as mum preparing our school lunches to comforting her when Dad died, always being there until she joined him again.

Dad died years earlier. I am the eldest of 5 children and he was my Rock. Dan Fogelberg's "Leader Of The Band" holds a lot of meaning for me. Grief - it's nice having a special song to help you get through that period of spiral emotion.

I don't know if Dewey or Gerry have written any songs dedicated to departed parents. If not, it would be nice to hear one or two someday.

Would anyone here like to share their special songs for lost family, loved ones or friends. Some songs have even been written about loved pets.

If I may say so, I think Gerry's "Lazarus" is about his dad.

Hey Bluey & NancyM

I'm very fortunate that both of my parents are still alive & kicking, but I do love the song "MAMA" by Electric Light Orchestra...not to be confused (please!) with their song Ma Ma Belle.

And for those of you that are familiar with the works of the Scottish-Canadian tenor, John McDermott (I've met him 3 times now!!), his song "THE OLD MAN" is very heart wrenching.

John McDermott does a rendition of the classic "DANNY BOY" that stirs the soul and reduces me to tears. Ah, yes, I'm an emotional one.

Hope everyone out there is well.

Chaz :)

"Lazarus" - Gerry Beckley - "Horizontal Fall"

Thanks Nance. If you're right, it gives a new meaning to the song for me.

What about David Gates' (from the 70s band, BREAD) ode to his late father in the song:

"EVERYTHING I OWN."

Stirring stuff.

Nice thread, Bluey. One song comes to mind from a different perspective and as a reminder to those of us who are moms and dads. From 1974 and Harry Chapin...

As a radio guy who also moonlights as a mobile DJ,I can tell you that there are a number of songs out there geared towards moms and dads that get requested at lots of weddings. Several include "Song For Mama"(1997)Boyz II Men; "Holes In The Floor Of Heaven"(1998)Steve Wariner and "Daddy's Hands"(1986)by Holly Dunn. Two others that come to mind are Jimmy Dean's spoken word recording called "IOU" which he recorded for his mom,and even Barry Manilow's 1979 single "Ships" dealing with a son and his dad. When you add in songs about parents and their kids...well,there's even more of those out there, especially at the country format.

Great interpretation, Nancy... Thx, Bluey, for the link to the lyrics. The song is worth another listen:

Funny, Nance, I was gonna say that I've always thought Warm Gone Gray was about Gerry's dad's passing. But then again, most of Horizontal Fall has a melancholy feel to it. Perhaps the whole record is an exercise in grief catharsis.

Hey Cat

Isn't it fabulous? Such an evocative song! Were you able to hear the whole thing? If not...give a listen to the entire song. One of my favourites from all time. I have searched and searched the globe for the piano music to MAMA, but every ELO piano book compilation seems to include everything but this jewel...!!!!

Chaz :)

Thanks Chaz & Cat for your links to ELO's "Mama" and Harry Chapin's "Cats In The Cradle". I hadn't seen either of those videos before.

Here's the 7.14 min version of ELO's "Mama". Great song Chaz

A couple of other songs come to mind. John Lennon's "Julia",
in memory of his mother. It was the only Beatles song he recorded entirely on his own. Click onto the Beatles video.

The other is Eric Clapton's very sad dedication following the tragic death of his 4 year old son, Connor - "Tears In Heaven"

Hey Cat...I'm so glad you had a chance to listen to ELO's MAMA.

Hey Bluey...Thanks ever so much for providing us with the youtube link to MAMA. I've been in love with this song for 36 years!!

Hey Everyone...if you're not familiar with this poignant ELO tune, please have a listen.

Chaz :)

p.s. Bluey...when my two sons were little boys, I could NOT listen to Eric Clapton's TEARS IN HEAVEN. Knowing what happened to that dear little lad was just way too painful.

Chaz, ELO's "Mama" is just a great song right from the first notes, so poignant. I like the line "life must go on though the end is near." Thanks, Bluey, for the YouTube full-length link. I've added it to my playlist. It looks like that channel has a lot of good ELO material so I'll have to check it out. I saw ELO in concert at the Hampton Coliseum (Virginia) in 1976. Wolfgang's Vault has another concert from that tour, and listening to it really took me back. Robert Palmer was the opening act at Hampton, promoting his "Pressure Drop" album. Everyone was going, 'who is this guy?' but then he wowed us with his voice and stage presence (suit and tie, no less). I went right out and bought the LP even with its provocative album cover photo... (see what I mean?) (sorry to digress; must be having one of those senior moments)

That is true, Mo. I do feel the same way about the whole CD.
And Gerry did include a photo of his dad in it.
